Australische wetenschappers zijn op weg om onzichtbare kleren te maken. Licht kan zo gemanipuleerd worden
dat het objecten onzichtbaar maakt, zegt doctoraatsstudent Alessandro Tuniz van de afdeling Fotonica
en Optische Wetenschap van de universiteit van Sydney.
Brekingsindex
De theorie draait rond de brekingsindex, de snelheid waarmee licht door een substantie gaat.
Metamaterialen absorberen licht. Metaal reflecteert licht en glas vertraagt het, dat is wat het licht zichtbaar maakt.
Hoe dikker het materiaal, hoe meer licht het absorbeert. Tuniz werkt nu aan onzichtbare draden
door vezels te verkleinen tot een nanoschaal, waarbij ze toch hun interne structuur behouden.
"De onzichtbaarheid wordt gerealiseerd door de brekingsindex van de metamateriaalvezels
gelijk te krijgen met de omgeving," zegt Tuniz aan news.com.au.
Golflengte
Tuniz en zijn collega's hebben vezels gemaakt die 100 microns dik zijn, maar om onzichtbare draden te hebben,
moeten ze nog 100 keer kleiner. Indien ze daarin slagen, zal het metamateriaal enkel onzichtbaar zijn in licht
met een bepaalde golflengte. Zo zullen de draden bv. 'verdwijnen' in rood licht, maar nog steeds zichtbaar zijn in groen. |
Voor onzichtbare draden zie ik, als ze sterk genoeg zijn, nog wel een toepassingsmogelijkheid,
maar onzichtbare kleding lijkt mij niet iets waar de wereld echt behoefte aan heeft.
