Op 8 januari 1935 wordt Elvis Aaron Presley geboren.
Hij is er een van een tweeling.
Zijn broertje Jesse Garon Presley, sterft direct na de geboorte.
De kleine Elvis vindt het prachtig gospelsongs mee te zingen in de kerk.
Hij speelt graag gitaar.
Hij wint als 10-jarig kereltje de tweede prijs (vijf dollar) tijdens de jaarlijkse talentenjacht
met de smartlap 'Old Shep'.

Aan het einde van de zomer van 1948 vertrekt de familie Presley naar Memphis
in de hoop een nieuwe toekomst op te bouwen.
Elvis gaat naar de Humes Junior High.
Hij is een onopvallende, middelmatige leerling die ervan droomt zanger en acteur te worden.
In 1954 stapt hij de studio van Sam Phillips binnen om voor $4 een plaatopname te maken.
Net als zovelen wil Elvis 'ontdekt' worden.
Bij wijze van grap speelt Elvis 'That's allright mama' van Arthur Crudup.
Phillips is laaiend enthousiast.
Het nummer wordt een redelijk grote, maar lokale hit.

Direct gaat Elvis optreden en merkt wat voor uitwerking zijn spontane schokkende bewegingen
op zijn jonge publiek hebben.
Hele horden welopgevoede jonge grietjes, die zich letterlijk de haren uit het hoofd trekken van hysterie,
bestormen het podium als Elvis staat te heupwiegen en te schouderschokken.

'Colonel' Tom Parker Parker (de uit nederland afkomstige imigrant Dries van Kuijk) ziet brood in Elvis
en wordt eind '55 zijn manager.
Het eerst dat Parker regelt is het afkopen van het Sun-contract door platenmaatschappij RCA Victor.
Rond zijn 21e verjaardag stapt Elvis de RCA-studio in Nashville binnen en neemt vijf songs op,
waaronder 'Heartbreak Hotel.' Het wordt een wereldhit.

De filmbonzen bieden Elvis een contract aan.
Hij speelt in 'Love Me Tender', 'Jailhouse Rock' en 'King Creole', stuk voor stuk kassuccessen.
Op 24 maart 1958 haalt 'Uncle Sam' Elvis binnen zijn gelederen.
Gladys, Elvis' moeder sterft in augustus van dat jaar.
Elvis is ontroostbaar.
Na het beëindigen van zijn dienstplicht neemt Elvis tal van nieuwe nummers op,
die alle de hoogste regionen van de hitlijsten bereiken.
In de jaren daarna is Elvis te zien in een dertigtal middelmatige, maar winstgevende film-musicals.

Op 1 mei 1967 trouwt hij met Priscilla Beaulieu en op 1 februari 1968 wordt zijn enige kind,
Lisa Marie, geboren.
In de 'Come Back'-special in 1968 bewijst Elvis de enige echte koning van de rock & roll te zijn.
Hij zweert nooit meer een nummer te zingen of in een film te spelen waar hij niet achter staat.

Elvis gaat weer op toernee ("Ik miste het contact met het publiek.") en treedt op voor volle zalen.
In 1973 ruilt Priscilla Elvis in voor haar karateleraar Mike Stone.
Elvis is verbijsterd en grijpt naar verdovende middelen.
Na de scheiding die Elvis maar niet kan verkroppen, gaat het snel bergafwaarts met Presley.
Hij verzwelgt pillen als Smarties en op 16 augustus 1977 sterft hij 'aan een onregelmatighe hartslag
met hartstilstand als gevolg'.
Elvis sterft in de badkamer van Graceland, met het boek "De Lijkwade van Turijn" in zijn hand.
The King is dood, maar z'n muziek leeft eeuwig voort.

MEMPHIS - The King is dertig jaar dood. Op 16 augustus 1977 stierf Elvis Presley op 42-jarige leeftijd.
Overal ter wereld wordt stilgestaan bij de dood van een van de grondleggers van de moderne popmuziek.

In Memphis, de stad waar Presley woonde en ligt begraven, is een kaarsentocht naar zijn landgoed Graceland.
's Avonds is er een groot concert met de originele band van Elvis en livebeelden van hem.
De weduwe en de dochter van Presley zijn daarbij aanwezig. Dochter Lisa Marie heeft een video opgenomen
waarin ze zingt met haar overleden vader. Het filmpje verschijnt vrijdag op de website Spinner.com.

In Valkenburg aan de Geul is donderdag een Elvis Memorial Concert. Optredens zijn er van onder anderen
Peter Koelewijn. Radio 2-dj Daniël Dekker presenteert het evenement. Ook zijn er films van en documentaires
over Elvis te zien op diverse tv-zenders. In Memphis zijn ongeveer honderdtwintig fans van de Nederlandse
Elvis-fanclub.

Elvis Aaron Presley werd op 8 januari 1935 geboren in Tupelo (Mississippi).
Hij verkocht 500 miljoen platen en scoorde wereldhits als Suspicious Minds , Return To Sender, Jailhouse Rock,
Are You Lonesome Tonight en In The Ghetto. Hij acteerde in ruim dertig films.
Na een turbulent leven overleed hij op 16 augustus 1977 aan een overdosis medicijnen,
die hij op doktersvoorschrift gebruikte. De King ligt begraven op Graceland.
