Acteur Rik Mayall (56) overleden
De Britse acteur en komiek Rik Mayall is overleden. Mayall werd in de jaren tachtig ook in Nederland
zeer bekend door zijn rol in The Young Ones. Mayall speelde daarin de anarchistische en en seksueel
gefrustreerde dichter Rick. Met zanger Cliff Richard scoorde de cast van The Young Ones in diezelfde tijd
een hit met een heruitgave van Richards Living Doll.
Mayalls belangrijkste tegenspeler in de The Young Ones was Adrian Edmondson, die de rol van gestoorde
heavy-metal-fan Vyvyan speelde. De twee kenden elkaar sinds begin jaren tachtig uit de Londense comedy-scene.
Bottom
Na The Young Ones verschenen ze samen in slapstick-sitcom Bottom. Mayalls rol van Richie leek sterk
op die van Rick uit The Young Ones. Net als The Young Ones werd Bottom in Nederland door de VPRO uitgezonden.
Later speelde hij in The New Statesman de politicus Alan B'stard, die in allerlei problemen raakte.
Daarmee werden vooral de Conservatieven in Groot-Brittannië op de hak genomen.
Mayall nam ook opvallende bijrollen voor zijn rekening, zoals die van de over-the-top actieheld Lord Flashheart
in Blackadder, met Rowan Atkinson.
Coma
Mayall lag in 1998 dagen in coma na een ongeluk met een quad, maar herstelde bijna volledig.
Vorig jaar zei hij over dat ongeluk: "Het belangrijkste verschil tussen nu en vóór het ongeluk is
dat ik gewoon heel erg blij ben dat ik leef."
Mayall was 56, getrouwd en vader van drie kinderen. Over de doodsoorzaak is niets bekend.

overleden na een rondje joggen 's ochtends. Dat schrijft The Telegraph.
Barbara Robbins uitspraak volgt op het nieuws dat de autopsie op het lichaam
van Mayall nog geen uitsluitsel heeft gegeven over de doodsoorzaak en dat
verdere testen noodzakelijk zijn. De 56-jarige komiek overleed afgelopen
maandag plotseling. |
